Healing After a Tooth Extraction
A blood clot forms over the empty socket when a broken tooth is extracted. This stops excessive bleeding and encourages healing. You are instructed to bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes after the tooth extraction. You may have to repeat this with fresh gauze a few times before the bleeding stops. Once the clot is formed, do not dislodge the clot.
You’ll want to avoid a few things for the first 72 horas, incluso:
- Sucking on a straw
- Drinking alcohol
- Brushing teeth next to the empty tooth socket
- Probing the socket with your tongue
Do not rinse your mouth until the next day, using warm salt water and swishing gently to avoid disrupting the clot. Also, avoid vigorous exercise or activities for the first 24 hours after the extraction. Your emergency dentist will give you detailed instructions for home care while you recover.
You may experience some pain and swelling, but this will subside within 48 horas. Over-the-counter medications can minimize any discomfort. An ice pack or unopened pack of frozen vegetables can reduce the swelling. If OTC medication doesn’t work, contact our office. Drink lots of liquids and eat soft foods the first day. We may prescribe antibiotics, which you should take until gone, even if you feel fine.
Be sure you brush and floss regularly after the first 24 horas. Your tooth extraction will heal more quickly, and brushing and flossing will keep your mouth clean and fresh while you heal. You can return to eating normally after 24 hours if you feel up to it but try to avoid crunchy foods or seeds that could get caught in the empty socket.

Replacing a Missing Tooth
After a tooth extraction, you may want a dental implant to replace the missing tooth. Típicamente, the area needs to heal for several weeks or months before an implant can be placed. Factors that affect how soon you can get a missing tooth replaced include the condition of the jawbone, your overall health, and the type of implant used. On occasion, a same-day implant may be possible, but your doctor will determine this after performing the extraction. The crown for the top of the implant is installed by your regular dentist.
