Meet Dr. Blake Nguyen Lam, MD, DDS
Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dental Implant Specialist El Paso TX
Dr. Blake Nguyen Lam was born in Kien Giang, Vietnam and raised in Houston, Texas. His interest in oral surgery began when he was a third year medical student at UT-Southwestern Medical School at Dallas while he was rotating through general surgery. He attributed his interest in oral surgery to his woodcrafting that gives him the artistic manual dexterity for surgical procedure. His interest in oral surgery grew after shadowing his mentor, Dr. Tiwana and 2 oral surgery externships at Parkland Memorial hospital and University of Alabama Birmingham University of hospital.
Education and Experience
After graduating from North Shore Senior High School, Dr. Lam went to University of Houston – Downtown to obtain his B.S in Chemistry and Biology. During his time at UHD, he started an environmental garden that developed into what is now the UHD sustainability garden and compost center while maintaining academic standing on the Dean’s List. After graduating from UHD, he went to a premier medical school at University of Texas-Southwestern Medical School at Dallas and acquired his medical degree (MD). He acquired his doctor of dental surgery (DDS) from the prestigious University of Health San Antonio School of Dentistry. While in dental school, he participated in the oral surgery honors program and was on the class executive committee. During his dental school training, Dr. Lam was accepted to train at Parkland Memorial Hospital, globally considered one of the premier training sites for oral and maxillofacial surgery. After graduating in the top of his class with numerous awards and earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, Dr. Lam continued his residency in oral maxillofacial surgery. He completed a year of General Surgery Internship, including training in pediatric surgery, trauma surgery and critical care. Dr. Lam spent 8 months of training dedicated solely to anesthesia, including hospital-based general anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia and office-based sedation. In his free time, he was actively attending various continuing education courses including SORG modules, AAOMS annual meeting and AAOMS Implant conference. He served as the chief resident at Parkland Memorial Hospital, University of Texas – Southwestern Medical Center, Children’s Dallas, Dallas VA Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital, John Peter Smith Hospital, Cook Children’s, and Zale Lipshy Hospital. Covering 5 level I and II trauma hospitals and tertiary care centers, he received extensive training in dentoalveolar surgery, head and neck trauma and reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, dental implantology, facial cosmetic surgery including rhinoplasty and facial augmentation surgery, pathology and cleft lip and palate surgery. Today, Dr. Lam’s surgical interests include dentoalveolar surgery, dentalimplantology, TMJ surgery, pathology, orthognathic surgery, and facial augmentation/reduction and facial cosmetic surgery. He is passionate about teaching and has spoken at numerous meetings on topics including all of the above. He remains active in local and national societies and is on staff at multiple hospitals. His focus on complex surgery stems from the advanced training during his residency being a referral base throughout the North Texas region from other surgeons in all disciplines. Using his training in 3D technologies, he can plan all of his surgical cases and design his own surgical splints and guides for complete control over the end surgical result.
Outside of the Office
Outside of work Dr. Lam enjoys spending time and travels with his dog Snap Pea. He enjoys fishing, gardening, cooking and exploring the outdoors. He looks forward to becoming active members in the community and giving back to the opportunities that have been presented when he immigrated from Vietnam. When not working, he can often be found working on his own garden and travels on the weekend to different parts of the country. Dr. Lam is a strong believer in treating every patient like family and looks forward to helping you obtain the most advanced care you deserve today.
